Cost to Replace Kitchen Cabinets and Countertops Together

Doing both at once is the efficient order of operations. Here is what the combined job costs and why the sequence matters.

By Mastaba Kitchen & Bathroom Remodeling Updated 22 September 2026 7 min read

Replacing cabinets and countertops together is not a bundle deal, it is a technical necessity. Countertops are templated to the installed cabinets, so new counters on old cabinets means the counters fit the old layout, and new cabinets under old counters is generally impossible because removing a stone counter intact is unlikely.

The result is that these two items are effectively one decision, and pricing them separately is misleading.

Why the sequence is fixed

Cabinets are installed and levelled first. Countertops are then templated to what is actually there, not to the drawing, because real installations differ from drawings by a quarter inch in places and stone does not forgive that.

Templating to fabrication is one to two weeks. During that period the kitchen has cabinets and no work surface, and the sink is disconnected. This is unavoidable and it is the part of a kitchen project people find hardest.

Only after the counters are in can the backsplash be tiled, the sink and faucet be connected, and the appliances go back. Everything downstream waits on the stone.

What moves the price

  • Cabinet tier. Stock, semi-custom or custom. The largest variable by far.
  • Countertop material. Laminate around $40 per square foot installed, quartz $70 to $120, natural stone $80 to $200, exotic materials above that.
  • Edge profile and cutouts. Mitred and built-up edges, undermount sink cutouts, cooktop cutouts and drainage grooves all add fabrication cost.
  • Whether the layout changes. Keeping the same layout avoids plumbing and electrical work entirely.

Mistakes we see most often

  • Buying counters before cabinets are installed. Templating has to happen after installation.
  • Choosing an undermount sink after templating, which changes the cutout.
  • Not levelling the cabinets properly before templating. Stone will telegraph every deviation.
  • Forgetting that the kitchen has no sink for one to two weeks between template and installation.

What this means in the Capital Region

One Capital Region specific: in older homes with settled floors, cabinet levelling before templating is a real piece of work rather than a formality. A kitchen floor that has dropped an inch across its length, which is not unusual in a Troy or Albany house, means the base cabinets have to be shimmed carefully so the counter run reads level while the toe kick absorbs the discrepancy.

Getting that wrong produces a counter that is visibly out of level against the window sill or the backsplash, and it is not correctable after fabrication. It is one of the reasons we measure floor level before ordering anything.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace countertops without replacing cabinets?

Yes, and it is common, provided the cabinets are sound and can be levelled. The counters are templated to the existing cabinets, so the layout stays exactly as it is.

How long will I be without a sink?

One to two weeks, between the counters being templated and installed. It is the least comfortable part of a kitchen project and it cannot be shortened, because fabrication takes the time it takes.

What countertop material is best value?

Quartz, for most households. It needs no sealing, resists staining, tolerates everything a kitchen does to it, and sits in the middle of the price range. Natural stone is more beautiful and higher maintenance.

Do cabinets have to be level before templating?

Yes, precisely level. Stone telegraphs every deviation and cannot be adjusted after fabrication. In older homes with settled floors this is real work and it has to happen before the template.
