Single-piece or built-up crown, coped rather than mitred at inside corners so the joints stay closed when the house moves.
Wainscoting and panel work
Raised panel, flat panel, board and batten and beadboard, laid out so the panel widths work with the room rather than leaving an awkward offcut in the corner.
Coffered and beamed ceilings
Coffered grids and exposed-beam treatments, set out from the room centre and scaled to the ceiling height.

How much does custom trim work cost?
Crown moulding typically runs $12 to $28 per linear foot installed depending on profile and build-up, wainscoting $30 to $70 per linear foot, and a coffered ceiling $28 to $55 per square foot. Built-ins are quoted per project and usually start around $3,500 for a single bookcase wall. Historic profile matching adds a one-time knife-grinding cost. Mastaba quotes trim work itemised by room.
Can you match the existing trim in my older home?
Yes, and it is a large part of what we do in Troy, Albany and Saratoga Springs. We take a clean section of the original profile, have a custom knife ground to it, and run new stock that matches. For small repairs we can often splice and rebuild rather than replace a whole run.
Do you do trim work without a full remodel?
Yes. Standalone trim and carpentry is a service in its own right at Mastaba. Many of our trim clients want one room done properly, a stair upgraded, or a built-in added, with no other construction involved.
How long does a trim project take?
A single feature room such as a panelled dining room or coffered ceiling takes 4 to 8 working days. A whole-house casing and base package takes 2 to 4 weeks depending on house size. Built-ins that require shop fabrication add 2 to 3 weeks of lead time before installation.
Should trim be painted or stained?
It depends on the species and the house. Poplar and MDF are made to be painted and give the cleanest painted finish. Oak, cherry, maple and walnut are worth staining. In period homes we often recommend matching whatever the original intent was, because painted trim in a house designed for stained woodwork rarely looks right.
Do you install trim I have already purchased?
Yes. We install customer-supplied trim, doors and built-in components throughout the Capital Region. We will check the material before scheduling and tell you if anything is short, warped or the wrong profile, so you can exchange it before our crew is on site.
