Closet Remodel Cost: Budget to Premium Options

Closet systems range from a few hundred dollars to five figures. Here is what separates them and where the useful money is spent.

By Mastaba Kitchen & Bathroom Remodeling Updated 22 September 2026 6 min read

Almost every closet in a house built before about 2000 is a single hanging rod with a shelf above it, which wastes the majority of the vertical space inside it. Replacing that with a system that uses the full height is one of the highest-value-per-dollar changes available in a house, and it requires no permit and no trades beyond a carpenter.

The cost range is enormous because the category spans wire shelving from a big-box store to fully built-in cabinetry with drawers, lighting and custom finishes. All of them are called a closet remodel.

What moves the price

  • Reach-in versus walk-in. A reach-in closet has one usable wall. A walk-in has three or four, which multiplies both the opportunity and the cost.
  • Drawers. Drawers are the most expensive component per linear foot and the one people use most. A few well-placed drawers beat a lot of shelving.
  • Lighting. Most closets have a single bulb or none. Integrated LED strip lighting is inexpensive and transforms usability.
  • Doors. Replacing bifold doors with proper hinged or sliding doors changes the look of the bedroom as much as the closet.

What each tier gets you

  • Wire or laminate kit, $300 to $1,200. Off-the-shelf components, self-installed or fitted in a day. Doubles usable hanging space in a reach-in closet for very little money.
  • Fitted melamine system, $1,500 to $4,500. Made to the closet dimensions, with adjustable shelving, double-hang sections, drawers and shoe storage. The sweet spot for most reach-in and small walk-in closets.
  • Built-in millwork, $5,000 to $12,000. Site-built or shop-built cabinetry with solid drawer boxes, integrated lighting and a painted or stained finish matching the room.
  • Full dressing room, $12,000 to $18,000+. Island, seating, integrated lighting, glass-front cabinetry, and usually a reconfiguration of the room itself.

Mistakes we see most often

  • Designing for how much you own now rather than how you actually store it. Count your hanging items, your folded items and your shoes before specifying anything.
  • Using a single full-height hanging rod for everything. Most clothing is short-hang, and double-hanging the majority of a closet roughly doubles capacity.
  • Filling a walk-in with shelving to the point that there is no room to turn around. A walk-in needs about 36 inches of clear floor to function.
  • Skipping lighting. A closet you cannot see into is a closet you do not use properly.

What this means in the Capital Region

Older Capital Region homes present a specific closet problem: many of them barely have any. Houses in Troy, Albany, Cohoes and the Schenectady Stockade built before the 1920s were built when people owned far fewer clothes, and bedroom closets are frequently 18 inches deep or entirely absent.

In those houses the useful project is often not remodeling an existing closet but building one, either as a fitted wardrobe wall or by borrowing space from an adjacent room or hall. Built-in wardrobes in period rooms can be detailed to look original rather than added, which is a job for a finish carpenter rather than a closet system installer.

Post-war and later homes have conventional closets and respond very well to a fitted system. It is one of the cheapest meaningful improvements available in a Clifton Park or Colonie colonial.

Frequently asked questions

Is a custom closet system worth the money?

For a primary bedroom closet that you use daily, yes, and the mid-tier fitted systems deliver most of the benefit of the premium ones. For a guest room closet used twice a year, a basic kit is entirely adequate.

How much space does a walk-in closet need?

About 36 inches of clear floor to move in, plus 24 inches of depth for each wall of hanging. Below that you have a reach-in closet with a door you walk through, which is less useful than a well-fitted reach-in.

Can I add a closet to a room that has none?

Usually, either by building a fitted wardrobe against a wall or by taking space from an adjacent room or hall. In older houses with no closets this is common work, and detailing it to suit the period makes a significant difference.

Does adding a closet add value?

A bedroom without a closet may not count as a bedroom in a listing depending on local convention, so adding one can change how the house is marketed. That is a bigger effect than the cost of the closet itself.

How long does it take?

A kit goes in within a day. A fitted system takes one to three days on site after fabrication. Built-in millwork takes one to two weeks on site plus lead time.
